Description

The master's degree prepares you for a high-level of intellectual activity and scientific careers. For those who want to work after completing their training, the media and communications industry offers a wide range of employment opportunities. The training also prepares you to continue your studies at the doctoral level.
Those who choose the specialization in communication and media studies will become professionals with a thorough social science background, who will orient themselves in the medialization processes that can be considered a crucial issue of contemporary social phenomena, research and teach them independently as lecturers or researchers.
The communication and media specialist specialization trains professionals with a social and humanities background and practical skills who work in various fields of the contemporary media and communication industry as leaders, editors, programmers, international project managers, communication experts, media consultants, specialist journalists.
This program is recommended to applicants who are interested in the social sciences, contemporary public life, society and culture, and the social and cultural role of the media and new technologies. Those who like to write and read a lot, who like to participate in teamwork, make their own productions.
Applicants for the Communication and Media Studies MA graduate in a field of study with three specializations Communication and Media Research, Communication and Media Expert, and Digital Business Communication)  that enables them to enter some of the subfields in EU Nomenclature of Creative Industries (Books, Newspapers and magazines, Music, Performing arts, TV, Film, Radio, Video games, Visual arts, Architecture, Advertising).

Dozens of young former ELTE Media students teach in the media majors as lecturers, educating students as professionals in the creative industry.

Application deadlines

The deadline for application means the deadline of submission of the full and complete application package in the online system.

Period 1 for September intake: 01/11-30/11/2023 23:59 (CET)
Period 2 for September intake: 01/02-15/04/2024 23:59 (CET)
Period 3 for September intake: 16/04-30/06/2024 23:59 (CET)

The application procedure includes 3 periods in order to give the applicants the freedom to submit their application when it’s most suitable for them. The applicants of each period have the same chance to get admittance for the programme. However, please note, that the Faculty of Humanities ELTE reserves the right to cancel the entrance periods in case the number of the admitted applicants reaches the limit during the previous entrance periods.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a university bachelor’s (BA) degree (or an equivalent college degree) in the fields listed below. Previously earned credits for entry into the program are acknowledged in full only in case of a BA degree in Communication and Media Science or an equivalent college degree.

In the case of a BA degree from any other field of study (humanities, economics, law, informatics, arts, art communication, social sciences) the applicant must have at least 30 credits to enter the program from the fields of network communication, economics and management, cultural anthropology, culture science, communication, marketing, theory and culture of media, occupational psychology, intercultural studies, arts and art communication, linguistics, international communication, special media studies, sociology, social psychology and PR.

The educational and outcome requirements are defined by the Ministry of Human Capacities, Regulation No. 18/2016. (VIII. 5.). Details of the application and admission process are defined by the Organisational and Operational Regulations of ELTE.

The language of instruction is English. Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate a very good level of English-language skills.

Application procedure

The application starts in the online application system. Students need to register in the system, fill in the online application form, upload the required documents and follow the instructions during the application process.

Entrance examination and selection process:

When the university receives the full application package and it is checked by the Department of International Affairs an entrance exam date option will be sent no later than the application deadline for the relevant period. Please, check your messages in the application system, and the e-mail address that is linked to the account regularly. The applications are examined by the Admission Board no later than after each application period and applicants are notified of the outcome of the selection in the online application system after the decision is official. Admission letters are sent out in the online application system within a few days.

Procedure of the entrance examination

The entrance exam contains a discussion about the motivation of the applicant. Successful applicants must have a good command of English to pass the entrance exam. The format of the entrance exam is an online interview. Ranking is based on the overall evaluation of academic excellence (based on the submitted documents) and the results of the entrance exam.
