Faith in a Foreign Land: My Experience as a Muslim Student in Budapest
I’m Muhammad Usman Akmal and I’m studying for a Master’s in Computer Science - Data Science Specialization at ELTE.

When I came from Pakistan to begin my master’s degree at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), one of my biggest concerns was how I would practice my faith in a new country. I wondered where I would pray, how I would fast during Ramadan, and whether I would find a Muslim community to feel at home with.

Very quickly, Budapest proved to be more welcoming than I expected.

Finding Mosques and Community

To my surprise, Budapest has several mosques and Islamic centres, such as the Budapest Mosque, and other prayer spaces across the city. These places became a source of comfort, connection, and friendship.

Every Friday, Muslims from many countries gather for Jumma prayers (the weekly Friday congregational prayer for Muslims). The atmosphere is warm, diverse, and spiritually uplifting. The mosques also offer regular lectures, Qur’an study circles, and community events that help international students stay connected to their faith.

Ramadan in Budapest

Before Ramadan, I worried about preparing iftar (the meal eaten after sunset to break the daily fast) alone with a busy student schedule. But the Muslim community in Budapest made Ramadan feel special.

Many mosques provide free iftar (the meal eaten after sunset to break the daily fast) and even suhoor (the pre-dawn meal eaten before the fast begins), especially for students. Sitting together with Muslims from around the world felt like being part of a big family again.

Life as a Muslim Student at ELTE

Being a student ambassador at ELTE has shown me how diverse and supportive the university environment is. Professors and classmates are respectful, and many understand the challenges of fasting, prayer schedules, and cultural traditions.

With mosques, halal food options, and a friendly multicultural environment, practicing Islam in Budapest is easier than I imagined.

A Home Away from Home

My journey in Budapest has taught me that faith can flourish anywhere. I arrived worrying about how I would adjust, but today I feel grateful for a community that made this foreign land feel like home.
