Doctoral training in the Doctoral School of Linguistics combines the tradition of almost 400 years of excellence in research and education with the flexibility expected from the members of the European Higher Education Area and outside of Europe. The Doctoral School of Linguistics covers the whole spectrum of linguistics; one can choose not only from the most popular research topics but from topics that besides their academic values also offer the cultural uniqueness in the life of the region.

Admitted PhD students receive a scholarship from the Hungarian Government for the living costs during their PhD studies at ELTE, which is:
140 000 HUF (~435 EUR) in the first and second year
180 000 HUF (~560 EUR) in the third and fourth year
Applications can be accepted for the topics offered by the supervisors of the doctoral schools (to be published on the website of the Faculty)
The applicants will be interviewed by an admission committee (entrance examination). In this interview, they will be asked about previous university achievements, th individual research plan and the scientific competence in the field of interest.
Approximate date of the interviews: 3 June 2019 - 21 June 2019
The Faculty's doctoral council decides of acceptance or rejection on the grounds of the admission committee’s reports prepared following the interview.
Approximate date of the decision: 1-19 July 2019
The decision regarding admission or rejection will be sent by post by the Department of Doctoral and Academic Affairs.
The admission resolution does not create a student status in itself, only the personal enrolment at the University establishes the student status. Before sending the application, please contact the head of the doctoral training program in the frame of which you wish to study.
Length of the programs: 4 years (8 semesters) + 1 year for submitting the dissertation
Credit points to be obtained: 240.
Years 1 and 2 (Semesters 1-4): doctoral training (courses) and research. The aims of the courses are to deepen the students’ knowledge in their special field of study, to endow them with the research methodology needed for an academic career, and to develop their qualities as teachers and researchers.
At the end of Semester 4, the doctoral students must take a comprehensive exam. When successful, the students can proceed to Semesters 5-8 (research and dissertation).
