The rector received his official appointment from President János Áder on 24 June, 2021 at the Sándor Palace (Sándor-palota).

The Senate of Eötvös Loránd University voted on the rector's nomination on 19 April, 2021. In a secret ballot, the Senate elected László Borhy as the rector candidate by a large majority – receiving 28 votes in his favor.

László Borhy has been the rector of Eötvös Loránd University since 2017, the rector's second term begins on 1 August, 2021 and lasts four years.
