Information for students staying in quarantine

Updated: 4 February 2021

Students who enter Hungary from any foreign country have to stay in mandatory quarantine for 10 days (according to the regulations of 21 September 2020). When entering Hungary, you will be asked to provide information to the police, including the place of quarantine. The information can also be submitted electronically at least 24 hours prior arrival here (select the COVID-10 form), we recommend doing so in order to make entering the border faster. As a main rule, the address should correspond to the one provided in the certificate of equity request. Upon the entry from abroad, all student must undergo a medical examination at the border, and you are obliged to cooperate and tolerate it.

Students must go to their given accommodation directly after entering Hungary and also contact their university (via email preferably their faculty coordinators) within 24 hours

Quarantine mark (a red poster) obtained at the border must be clearly displayed outside on the front door of your place of stay. The assigned police department regularly checks the compliance with the quarantine. You must not leave the quarantine until the mandatory 10 days are over. The breach of the rules will entail penalty fee and the termination of your student and/or scholarship status.

It is possible to leave quarantine early following two negative SARS-CoV-2 tests, for further information please see the “PCR-TESTS FOR STUDENTS” section below. If you chose to stay in quarantine for 10 days, you can leave your accommodation after the given end date without further administrative procedures, provided you are healthy and you don’t experience any symptoms.

PCR-tests for students

IMPORTANT! The organization of 2 free PCR tests is currently not available to students. Information about this service for the 2021/22 academic year will come soon!

To leave quarantine early, you need to present two negative SARS-CoV-2 tests (molecular biology examination in compliance with professional medical practice – PCR tests) performed within 5 days at least 48 hours apart. The first test can be performed in one of the Schengen countries, Coratia, the United States of America or Canada, but the second has to be done in Hungary.

Please follow the next steps to leave the quarantine before the 10 days are over:

1. Arranging an appointment for the PCR tests

You can arrange testing individually at one of the certified private providers for 19 500 HUF/test (this is a government capped price, do not pay more). Please ask ELTE ESN Mentors or your faculty coordinator for more information and for assistance.

2. Obtaining a permission to leave the quarantine for testing purposes

Once you received the information about your PCR-test appointment, you have to report the date and time to the police here (select submissions related to epidemic control measures> Send information about the PCR test date> COVID-06 form). You are obliged to go directly to the testing place for the pre-arranged time in a mask and return home without any unjustified interruptions.

3. Requesting early leave from quarantine

Once you have the results of the two negative tests, you should submit them to the police here (select submissions related to epidemic control measures> Send information on the results of PCR negative tests related to border crossing> COVID-08 form). Please wait for the approval from the competent police station, and only after that you are exempted from the mandatory quarantine.

Please note that issuing the special permissions, getting an appointment for the tests, receiving the results, and receiving the exemption from the quarantine is not automatic and can take days. You may not leave the quarantine long before the 10 days are over.

If a student tests positive for SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the current regulations of the National Public Health Centre have to be followed.

What to do in case of symptoms of SARS-CoV-2?

If you feel any symptom of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), please do not leave your place of residence. Even if you are not in quarantine at the time, please stay at home for a while.
