Achievements in the fields of mobility, inclusion and quality assurance

During the first educational project of the Alliance, ELTE was leading the work packages focusing on Mobility (WP5) and Inclusiveness (WP6) while also playing a leading role in the expert group on quality assurance and accreditation within the Governance work package (WP2). In this page, you can learn more about the most important achievements of these working groups.

Mobility

Aligning with the objectives of the European Universities initiative, the Work Package responsible for mobility (WP5) was striving to create a unique international climate in CHARM-EU, in which mobility is considered a “norm” rather than an exception. The mobility experts were working on the diversification of mobility opportunities and funding schemes while continuously monitoring, evaluating and, if necessary, modifying mobility activities for quality improvement.

  • The working group has developed a comprehensive mobility scheme – focusing on the principles of inclusiveness and sustainability – as part of the CHARM-EU Master's programme: students participate in semester and blended mobility (built into the programme) and have the possibility to participate in traineeship mobility after graduation. This scheme is complemented by the mobility of teachers, staff and external stakeholders supporting the learning experience and helping to deliver activities that are sustainable and support the development of educators.
  • As a result of the implementation of the Master’s programme, around 220 student and 40 teaching mobility have taken place between partner universities since September 2021.
  • The mobility expert team created a tailor-made Innovative Mobility Matrix System, which is a dynamic network of concepts and implementation tools in support of embedding mobility into the curricula, teaching and learning strategies and services.
  • The work package has also produced an Interactive Mobility Handbook for the Alliance to support the management and administration of all mobility activities connected to CHARM-EU' joint master’s degree programme.
  • Furthermore, mobility experts have developed a Unique Funding System for mobility and made suggestions on how other university alliances could apply the practices developed by CHARM-EU.

Inclusion and diversity

The overall objective of the Work Package responsible for Inclusiveness (WP6) was to embed inclusion and diversity “into the DNA of CHARM-EU” by integrating these values into the approach of the programmes (starting from the design phase) in order to permeate the educational, research and other activities of the Alliance.

  • The CHARM-EU Inclusiveness Survey conducted by the working group mapped inclusion, diversity and non-discrimination policies and practices across the Alliance. The results have proven to be useful not only for CHARM-EU but also for the European Higher Education Area, as there are not many detailed and comparative research on the subject at national and EU level.
  • CHARM-EU good practices in the field of inclusion and diversity collects practices from the partner universities to inspire stakeholders and individuals to take a leap and further test them in their realities. The novelty of the report is that it has explored in depth not only the successes and opportunities, but also the challenges through a detailed set of criteria designed by the CHARM-EU Inclusiveness Team.
  • The CHARM-EU Inclusivity Plan showcased what it means to mainstream inclusiveness and diversity in CHARM-EU's organisational culture and overall operation. The Plan also contains the set of concrete objectives and actions for CHARM-EU and its Master's in Global Challenges for Sustainability.
  • The report Inclusivity plan review and key findings deals with the planning, implementation and monitoring processes of CHARM-EU and highlights key findings and lessons learned during the pilot edition of the CHARM-EU Master's programme between September 2021 and February 2023.
  • On the 16th of September 2022, ELTE successfully hosted the first CHARM-EU Inclusion Conference titled “Creating an Inclusive University – Access and Participation in European Higher Education: Challenges and Enablers”. A case study of the design and implementation of the conference written by CHARM-EU Inclusion Team Leader and Assistant Professor at ELTE’s Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education Dr. Agnes Sarolta Fazekas-Vinkovits has been published in the AHEAD Journal.

Governance

The Governance Work Package (WP2) of the first CHARM-EU project was working on the design of the future governance and management model of the Alliance as well as on policies and procedures to create a framework to work together efficiently and to be able to expand and scale activities. ELTE led the expert subgroup on Quality and Accreditation and the negotiations between partners, accreditation agencies and Ministries.

  • Thanks to the work of the expert group, the CHARM-EU Master's programme Global Challenges for Sustainability became the first accredited Master’s degree programme under the criteria of the European Universities initiative. Furthermore, the results of the discussions between stakeholders are of particular importance in the discourse on accreditation and quality assurance of international joint programmes.
  • Written by the Head of ELTE’s CHARM-EU Office Dr. Ferenc Takó, a study on CHARM-EU’s experiences about the international accreditation of its Master’s programme was featured in the first issue of the Hungarian Accreditation Review of 2023. Learn more here.
  • You can read more about the process and challenges of quality assurance and accreditation in CHARM-EU's Handbook on Governance and Management.
  • The new governance model designed for the Alliance is described in CHARM-EU’s Governance Terms of Reference that presents the specific roles, responsibilities and decision-making mechanisms of CHARM-EU.
