ARWU: ELTE is the Best University in Hungary in seven Academic subjects

The Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) 2023 has been published for academic subjects. The league table contains rankings of universities in 55 subjects across five fields of science (Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences). More than 1,900 out of 5,000 universities across 104 countries and regions are finally listed in this year’s rankings.

Eötvös Loránd University is listed in eight out of 55 academic subjects this year. In six of these subjects (Physics, Biology, Psychology, Education, Political Science, and Communication), it is ranked the best higher education institution in Hungary, while in Mathematics, it shares first place with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. ELTE is the only university from Hungary in the rankings in the subjects of Psychology, Education, Political Sciences, and Communication. In terms of Communication, ELTE is a new player in the list of the top institutions in the world. The ranked academic subjects offered by ELTE are shown in the table below.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities was first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since 2009, the survey has been conducted by a fully independent organisation called ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. They began to publish the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in 2017. The indicators used to measure the performance of world universities in respective subjects include research output in top journals (Q1), citation impact, the number of publications authored in international collaboration, the number of papers published in top journals or presented at leading conferences, and the number of researchers winning international academic awards.
