CHARM-EU Opens New Academic Year HU
On the 1st of September, the new academic year at CHARM-EU began on five different European campuses, including ELTE. After the opening ceremony, new students of the Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability took part in a two-day orientation programme.

The CHARM-EU Alliance launched its first accredited master's programme a year ago with the cooperation of the five partner universities, including Eötvös Loránd University. This September, a new cohort of students can start their journey in this international, transdisciplinary program, while second year CHARM-EU students will work on specific sustainability challenges during their final, Capstone project.

Representatives of the all the CHARM-EU partner institutions gave welcoming speeches at the hybrid ceremony covering five university campuses. On behalf of ELTE, Imre Hamar, Vice-rector for international affairs greeted the news students. He emphasized that the Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability is “designed to provide its participants with skills and competences to handle the social and environmental challenges of our time” and encouraged students to cooperate, to work and think as a team, and to trust each other and themselves.

Following the ceremony, students were able to get to know each other and the five European university cities a bit better through various activities. Afterwards, the colleagues of the Alliance presented the structure and the most important elements of the master's programme, including the role of inclusivity and mobility. On behalf of ELTE, Ágnes Sarolta Fazekas, the leader of the Alliance’s work package responsible for inclusivity spoke about the role of inclusion and diversity, which pervades both CHARM-EU's culture and its master's programme. Ádám Csáky, ELTE CHARM-EU Office's international mobility coordinator presented the numerous exciting mobility opportunities embedded in the learning experience provided by the programme, while Ferenc Takó, head of the ELTE CHARM-EU Office summarized practical information regarding the master’s.

After the presentations, students starting their first phase at ELTE took part in a joint campus tour and city tour, and visited the university library.

During the second day, the students were given an overview of the teaching, learning and assessment methods and processes of the master's program. Through short lectures and e-learning tasks, they explored the CHARM-EU Virtual Learning Environment, discovered the Programme Leaning Outcome Domains and became acquainted with the innovative assessment methods and platforms. On behalf of ELTE, Krisztina Lénárt, Head of Department at the Directorate of Education, helped the students in their discovery.

For second-year students who started this master's programme last year, the Capstone phase begins on September 6. During this final phase, students work on a real sustainability challenge in groups and in collaboration with an external partner.
