Eötvös Loránd University has jumped one category from last year to No. 501–600 in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), and it is regarded as the best higher education institution in Hungary.

Jumping one category from last year, Eötvös Loránd Tudományetem has risen to category No. 501–600 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. As a result, after last year’s tie, ELTE has become the single best university in Hungary according to the ranking. In addition to ELTE, three other Hungarian institutions made it to the world’s best universities, namely Semmelweis University (No. 601–700), the University of Szeged (No. 701–800), and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (No. 901–1000).

At the top of the list, there is no change compared to last year: the same eight American and two British universities share the top ten places, and in the top three we find Harvard University (No. 1), Stanford University (No. 2), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (No. 3) this year again. On the European mainland, Paris-Saclay University is ranked No. 1 (and it is No. 15 in the world ranking), while in Asia, Tsinghua University has jumped four spots to No. 22 in the overall ranking.

The ARWU ranking was started to be published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003. Since 2009, the survey has been conducted by ShanghaiRanking, an independent organisation. For years, this list has been considered to be one of the most reliable rankings in the higher education profession. Every year, 2,500 institutions are ranked using a transparent methodology and data collected from external partners, and the best 1,000 are published. The indicators considered include, among other things, the number of papers and highly cited researchers, as well as the number of alumni and current staff members winning prestigious academic awards. For further details about the methodology used for compiling the list, see this page.
