Eötvös Loránd University Maintains Its Position in the 501–600 Band of the ARWU World Ranking in 2025

The ARWU ranking was first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and since 2009 it has been compiled by the independent organization ShanghaiRanking. Each year, around 2,500 universities are assessed based on publication output and the number of highly cited researchers, as well as the scientific awards received by alumni and current faculty members. Only the top 1,000 institutions are included in the list. More details about the methodology can be found in English on this page.

This year, four Hungarian institutions again ranked among the world’s best. The University of Szeged achieved the highest placement nationally (401–500), while Eötvös Loránd University retained its second position in Hungary by remaining in the 501–600 category. Semmelweis University ranked in the 601–700 band, and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics placed in the 801–900 category.

Of the six indicators considered, ELTE achieved the best results among Hungarian universities in three areas,

those are publication performance, publications in Nature and Science, and per capita academic performance.

With this year’s result, ELTE is ranked in the same group as institutions such as Jagiellonian University in Kraków, the University of Ljubljana, Boston College, and San Diego State University.

At the top of the global ranking, Harvard, Stanford, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have consistently maintained their leading positions for years. The top ten continue to be dominated by eight U.S. institutions and two from the United Kingdom.
