Summary of the lecture:

Near the end of a professional career, it is useful to look back on the main episodes of it (also reflected in the CV). However, the main topic of this talk will not be geology, but rather moral questions about the main decision points, such as:

Is teaching useful for the student, teacher, society? Is theoretical research useful? Is Petroleum exploration ethical and useful? Should I be ashamed of it? How long should we deal with petroleum? These questions will be answered by giving some case examples from my career, including a longer section on the MOL exploration success in N Pakistan.

At the end I would also try to answer the compelling question of: How to save geology for the future?

About the presenter:

László Csontos graduated from ELTE University, Budapest, as a geologist in 1983. He soon undertook PhD studies at Lille University, France and obtained the degree in 1988 with a topic on Bükk Mts. structural evolution. Right after PhD he remained at ELTE to teach Structural geology, Geological mapping, Seismic section analysis for some 23 years. During these years he cooperated with Prof Tamás Báldi’s Parathetis and Prof Frank Horváth’s Seismic interpretation research groups: cooperation with members of László Csontos’s Structural Geology research group at ELTE resulted in number of publications and industry reports. In 2006 he changed from university to industry to join MOL Petroleum Exploration Division for another 16 years. In this position he mainly dealt with Middle Eastern and Far Eastern countries, spending field trips in Oman, Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Pakistan. These also resulted in number of field work-related publications.

Freshly retired from MOL, he still continues dealing with geology as a part time contractual fellow and holding some short courses at university.
