Research physicist Gergely Endrődi will continue his research at ELTE
Gergely Endrődi's return was announced at a press conference, where the researcher stated, "It is a great feeling for me to be able to bring home the knowledge and experience in education and research that I gained abroad.”
Gergely Endrődi's work focuses on theoretical particle physics, primarily studying the formation of the universe, the structure of stars, and the microscopic composition of matter. His specialized research area is lattice field theory, a method that allows the simulation of elementary particles and their interactions using supercomputers. He first encountered this field at his alma mater, the Faculty of Science at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), where he joined a world-leading research group. Having earned his degree in physics and his PhD at our Faculty, he went on to continue his research abroad. He first worked at the University of Regensburg, and in 2016, he received the opportunity to lead his own research group at the University of Frankfurt. In 2020, he became a professor at Bielefeld University, and last year, he won a €2 million European Research Council research grant.

“Gergely Endrődi is joining a team that understands and appreciates his work, and can provide valuable support for him,” emphasized Imre Kacskovics, Dean of the Faculty of Science at ELTE. He also expressed his hope that Endrődi will not only bring his scientific expertise back home but will also contribute to the education of excellent scientists. This is particularly important, as one of the faculty’s main goals is to attract more talented young students, both from Hungary and abroad. A world-class scientist like Endrődi, with exciting, cutting-edge research, can serve as a great motivation for them.
Gergely Endrődi is the first to return to Hungary through the Research Grant Hungary program, initiated by the Hungarian government. The program aims to bring back Hungarian scientists who have achieved outstanding international results, thus strengthening the competitiveness of Hungarian science. Gergely Endrődi will begin his work at ELTE’s Faculty of Science in November.
