A complex energy development from more than HUF 1.6 billion has been implemented on Ecseri Road: the renovation will offer modern, energy-efficient, and fresh spaces for over 2,000 students. The building renewed both inside and outside was handed over by Ferenc Hizó, Deputy State Secretary for Circular Economy Policy at the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, and Gyula Scheuer, Chancellor of Eötvös Loránd University, on 18 March.

The complex energy reconstruction of the building belonging to the ELTE Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education in Ecseri Road was completed at the end of February. Due to the renovation, the primary annual energy consumption of the property may be considerably reduced, which saves the university significant amounts. The project was carried out with the grant assistance (KEHOP 5.2.2-16-2017-00112) spent on the energy modernisation of ELTE buildings in a total amount of HUF 1.64 billion.

Ferenc Hizó said at the handover ceremony that the reconstruction of the buildings of the Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education at ELTE created outstanding, twenty-first-century conditions. The Deputy State Secretary for Circular Economy Policy highlighted that the renovated building complex also meets the requirements of state-of-the-art energy efficiency.

“In recent years, we have improved ELTE’s building stock from the nearly HUF 8 billion provided by KEHOP grants, which has already resulted in cost reductions up to a billion over several years. Many of our projects are still in the preparation phase, and the energy upgrade of our properties continues,” emphasised Gyula Scheuer, Chancellor of Eötvös Loránd University.

Gyula Scheuer (Chancellor), Gabriella Papp (Dean of ELTE Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education), and Ferenc Hizó (Deputy State Secretary) attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Ecseri Road building complex (comprising buildings A, B, C) hosts more than 2,000 students and nearly 200 teaching, research, and administrative staff members. It is of paramount importance that the obsolete property built between 1968 and 1970, has been renewed following the requirements of the twenty-first century.

Construction work started in early 2021, and the students and teachers of the faculty could return to the renovated building in February 2022, following a period of forced absence owing to the pandemic. The project included, among other things, the replacement of doors and windows, the modernisation of mechanical systems, the insulation of the façade and ceiling, as well as the installation of photovoltaic systems. The external façade of the building has been coloured grey and burgundy, which reflects the image colours of the Faculty, and all the classrooms have been equipped with cooling and heating systems to enhance a sense of comfort.

In parallel with the renovation, minor internal alterations were made from the university’s own sources. The environment of the library with a collection of up to 90,000 volumes on special education and the history of special education, which is unmatched in the country, as well as the gymnasium and changing rooms have been renewed.
