Extension request

Extension

Scholarship holders who study on the Bachelor’s or Master’s level may apply for an extension of an additional semester a total of two times during their studies.

Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders who started their studies in 2019/20 or before are eligible to the same benefits as before.
Students who started their studies in the 2020/21 academic year or later will not receive further scholarship payments during the extension period

Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People students are eligible to scholarship payments during extension.

There are no extensions for doctoral students and students participating in preparatory programmes.

The applications are reviewed by the University and if approved, they will be forwarded to Tempus Public Foundation (TPF) for Stipendium Hungaricum and Diaspora students and to the Hungary Helps Agency (HHA) for Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People students, and these agencies will make the final decision. Students whose applications are refused can finish their programme as self-financed students.

Who can apply

Students can apply if:

  • they are scholarship holders in either Stipendium Hungaricum, Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship or Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People programmes,
  • they are studying in the Bachelor’s of Master’s level,
  • they are in their last financed semester in the 2023/24 academic year's spring semester.

Stipendium Hungaricum students will also need to secure the approval of their sending partner (the organization in charge of organizing the programme in their sending country). Contacting the partner is the student’s responsibility.

Evaluation criteria

The requests will be judged on a set of criteria. The requests of students who do not meet these criteria will be rejected.

For an application to be forwarded to the TPF or HHA the student will be judged on:

  1. The number of missing study credits
    • Students applying for their first extension cannot miss more than 90 credits.
    • Students applying for their second extension cannot miss more than 45 credits.
Credits awarded for the thesis and/or the thesis seminar are not counted in these amounts.
This will be calculated by the Registrar’s Office.
  2. Attendance and commitment to the studies
The confirmation and approval of the programme coordinator will be collected by the International Office of the Faculty, the student doesn’t have to contact anyone for this.
  3. Changed study programme, institution or language of studies
Special consideration will be given to students if they changed their programme, their institution or the language of their students during their first year.
The International Office of your Faculty knows if you are in this category, but you should also mention it in your request.
  4. Reasons for requesting an extension
Your application will be reviewed by the International Office of your Faculty. For ideas download the guide to writing a strong request at the end of the page. Take care to include as much detail as necessary.
  5. Student excellence
Special consideration will be given to students who show academic excellence or participate in extracurricular activities during their studies. Students involved in a research group, presenting in conferences, or participating in scientific competitions, students who won awards or grants, and also students who are volunteering or are a part of an organization of the University should secure proof of these activities and attach them to their application.

How to apply

The student has to submit the application to the University. For this download the template at the bottom of this page. The first part of the template is a data sheet, the second and third parts are text fields. Take care to fill in all the data and write a compelling reasoning in the second and third half. You do not need to fill the third section, if you apply for your first extension. All annexes must be listed at the end. If your Faculty asks for a transcript of records, that does not have to be listed.

The document is supposed to be printed, signed and scanned, however if you do not have access to the necessary equipment it is allowed to type your name at the end. The printed and scanned or photographed application must be legible.

The students can also simultaneously submit an application to their sending partner as well. However, this is not a requirement, unless the sending partner requests it from the student. In that case, you must comply with their deadlines, their documents and procedures. The University is not involved in this process.

The application and any annexes must be sent as an attachment in PDF format via email to your Faculty Coordinator.

The file name must be: FullName_extension.pdf and if applicable FullName_extension_annex1.pdf etc.

The deadline is April 25, 23:59

Before submitting your application consult the checklist at the end of this page!

You will be notified if your application has been approved by the University and forwarded to TPF or HHA. The final decision by these agencies can be expected by June.
