Inside ELTE's BSc Mechanical Engineering Program: What You Need to Know and Why It's Worth Exploring?

When I say mechanical engineering, first thing pops to your mind is probably a mechanic fixing a car, right? At least that’s what my mom thought when I first told her what I want to do with my life. For me, it’s a classic major and one of the oldest fields in the History of engineering: At ELTE, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering means diving into a high-quality education that prepares you for both the challenges and rewards of the profession. I am going to give you a glimpse of my experience as a second-year student!

A Diverse Curriculum

During seven semesters, we go through all possible topics and skills that an engineer must have, both theoretical and practical. We don't just learn about math and physics and further complicated equations, but also economics, business, logistics, ergonomics and other fundamentals. The courses are well organized to provide not just knowledge but also the ability to deal with real-life problems using an engineering background. We have several laboratories all around the Campus, my favorite one, is the manufacturing technologies Lab, where we deal with all types of machines and materials. No better way to learn than through practice!

Homework and assignments

In our studies everything requires precision and accuracy, every millimeter counts! Throughout the program, we are trained to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and produce high-quality work. Assignments usually involve designing components, whether through technical drawings, calculations, or CAD (Computer aided design) modeling. These projects did not only test my knowledge but also forge my critical thinking, my attention to detail, and my ability to make proper researches.

Preparing for the Job Market

One of the most valuable aspects of the program is its focus on practical experience. Completing an internship is a graduation requirement, we jump directly into the job market and start applying our skills into the real industry. The institute usually supports us, students, throughout this process, offering us guidance to make the transition smooth and beneficial for us and the employers.

The Challenge and the Reward

Without any doubt the program is challenging for me, but it’s equally rewarding: the best thing is the flexibility and the future opportunities. After graduating, I can work in various fields such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, robotics, mechatronics, designing, project management, construction, research and development, consulting, academia, etc... I believe it’s a journey that would shape me into someone capable of creating and innovating. Despite the struggles, it’s worth it when I see my ideas take shape and realize that every small detail matters.
