Passive student status

Passive student status

Passive student status
Updated: 16. 08. 2023.
The residence permit for the purpose of study is for study purposes, which requires an active student status. This means that if you passivate your student status, your residence permit automatically ceases and gets invalidated by the authorities.

What do you need to do after passivating your student status?

  1. Leave Hungary

When your student status is changed to passive, you need to leave Hungary.

OR

  1. Apply for another type of residence permit

If you do not want to leave Hungary, you need to apply for another kind of residence permit which is not connected to study purposes (e.g. family reunification, employment, other purposes, etc.). Please note that in order to get these kinds of residence permit, you have to prove that you are eligible for them.

Please visit the official website of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (formerly known as Immigration Office) where you can read about the different residence permit purposes.

Returning to Hungary

If you passivated your status and left Hungary (and you don’t have any kind of valid residence permit in Hungary), but you wish to continue your studies in the next semester, you need to restart the visa and/or residence permit process. For this you need to submit a student status certificate (which will show your passive status) and attach a support letter issued by your faculty. In this case, please contact your faculty coordinator who will provide you the required document.
