SH Sports Scholarship

Stipendium Hungaricum Sports Scholarship is a program for foreign students, which was launched by the Hungarian Government in 2021. The purpose of the program is to provide support for the studies of foreign students with internationally recognized sporting achievements in Hungarian higher education institutions, and to their participation in competitive university sports and non-university competitive sports, as well as to assist the development of sports life of the Hungarian higher education.  

Currently, two international sports federations are engaged in the programme, World Aquatics (AQUA, formerly FINA), and the International Judo Federation (IFJ).  

How to apply?

1. Apply to the international sports federation (AQUA or IFJ)

The deadline was April 2, 2024.

    • full name

    • chosen study programmes in order of preference (maximum two)

2. Submit application documents to Tempus Public Foundation

The deadline was April 23, 2024.
  • The required documents can be found in Call for Application (3.3)
  • Method of submission will be specified later by Tempus Public Foundation for those nominated by the international sports federations.

The scholarship can be awarded to citizens from almost 80 countries and sending partners for full degree studies. Partial (exchange) studies are not supported.

The benefits for scholarship holders

  • Exemption from paying application and tuition fees,
  • Place in a dormitory depending on the capacity of the higher education institution or HUF 40,000/month accommodation allowance for 12 months of the year during the whole period of full-time programmes or for the duration of the partial studies,
  • Contribution to the living expenses for 12 months a year, until the completion of the studies.
  • Health care services (social services) and supplementary private health insurance,
  • Free visa and residence permit administration,
  • Use of the services of the library free of charge.
  • Assigned academic mentor who assists the studies of the scholarship holder.
  • Sports related contributions
    • Possibility to train and participate in Hungarian competitive sports, including the provision of the necessary human conditions, as well as providing related services; team doctors, physiotherapists and psychologists

    • The World Aquatics (AQUA) undertakes to supplement the monthly allowance of the Athletes with an additional amount per semester to be determined by AQUA in the page 7 / 24 given year. International travel expenses of the scholarship holders shall either be provided by AQUA or be borne by scholarship holders as decided discretionary by AQUA.

    • The International Judo Federation (IJF) undertakes to supplement the monthly allowance of the Athletes with the amount of 100 EUR per month per Athlete at bachelor, master, and one-tier master level, and with an amount of 200 EUR per month per Athlete in case of studies at the doctoral level. Furthermore, international travel expenses of the scholarship holders shall be provided by IJF.

The amount of the scholarship as of 2023 is HUF 43,700 for students in preparatory, bachelor's and master's programmes, and HUF 140,000/month during the first two years (during the training and research period) and HUF 180,000/month during the second two years (the research and dissertation period) of doctoral studies.

Studies are offered on the following levels:

  • preparatory course in the Hungarian language (non-degree; 1 year)
  • Bachelor's programmes (undergraduate; 3 or 3 and ½ years)
  • Master's programmes (graduate; 2 years)
  • One-tier master programmes (5-6 years)
  • Doctoral programmes (2+2 years)
