The Hungarian team won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals at the 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad. The team was prepared for the competition was prepared for the competition by the Institute of Chemistry at ELTE, and two of the award-winning high school students are from ELTE Apáczai Preparatory School (ELTE Apáczai Gyakorlógimnázium).

The 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad was organized by Japan and took place from 24 July to 2 August, coinciding with the sports competition. Due to the pandemic, the 312 high school students from 84 countries could participate in the events of the Olympiad virtually.

The online selection and preparation of the Hungarian team was organized by the Institute of Chemistry at ELTE, with support from the Ministry of Human Resources. The most successful participants of the national academic competitions were selected. Hungarian high school students traditionally do well in the competition, this year winning 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

The silver medals went to Lucio Saracco (ELTE Apáczai Preparatory School, teachers Péter Sebő, Ágnes Sebőné Bagdi, Attila Villányi) and Dávid Benkő Mihály Fazekas High School (Fővárosi Fazekas Mihály Gimnázium), teacher Attila Albert).

Bronze medals were awarded to István Babcsányi (Mihály Fazekas High School, teacher: Attila Albert) and Benedek Sajósi (ELTE Apáczai Preparatory School, teachers: Péter Sebő, Ágnes Sebőné Bagdi, Attila Villányi).

The leader of the Hungarian team, Gábor Magyarfalvi, was elected as chairman of the Steering Committee of the Olympiad for the fourth time.
