The complex development of ELTE Szombathely campus has been completed. The campus modernised from an investment of 680 million HUF was ceremoniously delivered on 31 March 2022.

The Savaria University Centre became part of Eötvös Loránd University in 2017. However, the technical condition of the campus did not meet the modern requirements. The buildings have been renewed within the framework of the project “The Development of Higher Education Infrastructure at ELTE Savaria University Centre to Promote University Integration”. With this project, the university also responded to the increased use of the campus (partly due to integration).

The closing event of the project held on 31 March 2022 was attended by the leaders and staff members of ELTE, the representatives of public administration, educational institutions, as well as the industrial, commercial, and service sectors.

From the development programme comprising ten sub-projects, László Borhy, Rector of ELTE, highlighted the renovation of the boiler house aimed at energy saving, the updating of the Internet network, as well as the acquisition of interpreter booths and equipment to enhance language teaching, two mobile boathouses to promote water sports, Wi-Fi devices, and a supercomputer to support research. The rector added that he was pleased with the results of the project for both being a leader of the university and coming from Szombathely.

The university received 100 billion HUF funding for development over the past seven years, said Gyula Scheuer, Chancellor of ELTE. 80 percent of the amount was gained through applications for funding and 20 percent was acquired from government resources. 40 percent of the area of the institution was modernised from these funds. Of this, 6 billion HUF was spent on Szombathely.

In his praise of the project, the chancellor pointed out that the Wi-Fi network of the Savaria University Centre is of the highest standard even in comparison with the other parts of the university, and the supercomputer acquired provides an IT background not only for local research but also that in Budapest. Gyula Scheuer added that the past five years clearly demonstrated that it was a good idea for the Savaria University Centre and ELTE to join each other.

Csaba Hende, Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker for Legislation, spoke about the effects of the project on the region. He recalled the launch of mechanical engineering and IT training, stressing that these were essential for local companies to carry out developments. He illustrated this by referring to the most recent projects: the 5 billion HUF worth of investment announced by Schaeffler at the end of last year and the 26 billion HUF worth of investment announced by TDK recently.

Thanks to the investments in artificial intelligence and the transition from a traditional to a data-driven economy, 70 percent of the industry in Hungary belongs to the high-tech sector, said László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology. – This ratio is almost the same as in Germany, for example, and the technological background in Szombathely and many developments by ELTE may contribute to maintaining it.

The speakers then symbolically handed over the investment in the hall of Building C by cutting a ribbon of national colours.

Dávid Ritter, Chief IT Officer at ELTE, presented the information technology developments in the server room. Subsequently, Nóra Lenkai, Rector of the Savaria University Centre, proposed a toast praising the results achieved in Szombathely since the integration.
