The Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Ph.D. Program is part of the Philosophy Doctoral School at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest. We offer courses and dissertation supervision in the history of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, in Patristic thought, in Medieval Scholasticism, and in ancient and medieval Indian philosophy.

The Film, Media and Culture Theory Doctoral Program has long been the leading center of research in contemporary culture at ELTE University, Faculty of Humanities. Faculty members of the Art Theory and Media Institute, which hosts the Program, are outstanding representatives of Hungarian film and media studies who, apart from academic research, take an active part in the practical sides of their respective professions. The traditional fields of research like the history of film/television, theories of genres or the history of audiences are paired up in the core of studies by contemporary cultural studies and recent theories of visuality. The social embedding of the processes through which culture constitutes meaning or the political context of the technologies which produce and reproduce knowledge are of focal interest for the Program. According to the traditions of ELTE Faculty of Humanities the Program is fondly dedicated to the textual and aesthetic aspects of film and media, connecting these approaches seamlessly to the research on the production, technologies and control of analogical and digital contents. Apart from the classic aspects of reception our Program researches the usage and consumption of contemporary culture as well. The Program maintains external academic relations and partnerships with the leading Hungarian centers of similar profiles and plans long-term collaborations with universities of distinction.

The Ph.D. Program in Logic and Philosophy of Science is a subprogram of the Ph.D. Program in Philosophy. The main scope of the program is logic and formal approaches to philosophy of science, first of all philosophy of physics and mathematics. We also offer courses and research topics in the field of philosophy of language and formal semantics. The Logic and Philosophy of Science program operates in cooperation with other Ph.D. programs in Philosophy at Eötvös University, especially with the program in Analytic Philosophy. There is coordination and several points of connection between the two programs in the areas covered, courses offered, student supervision, and program requirements. All courses of the program are available in English. The discussion groups, seminar sessions, consultations and exams are held in English (except if all participants speak Hungarian).

We offer courses and dissertation supervision in most areas of analytic philosophy (Epistemology, Ethics, Metaethics and Moral Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, History of Analytic Philosophy, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Art, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology, Political Philosophy, Political Theory, Philosophical Logic, Philosophy of Mathematics and Mathematical Logic, Philosophy of Science with a focus on the Philosophy of Physics). The Aesthetics Ph.D. Program was launched at Eötvös Loránd University in 1995. It has been operating as an independent doctoral programme within the Doctoral School of Philosophy since 2001. The aesthetics of modernity stands at the focus of the programme's curriculum. The majority of doctoral works deals with the theoretical problems of aesthetics (mimesis, representation, text/image, etc.), the interpretation of major thinkers (from Kant to Nietzsche, from Schleiermacher to Gadamer, etc.) and the analysis of seminal discourses (theories of taste, philosophies of art in the 19th-20th centuries, phenomenological theory of fine arts, hermeneutics, etc.). The curriculum consists of a series of historic and theoretical courses led by the core faculty members of the doctoral programme, and of tutorial work with the supervisors concentrating on dissertation subjects. Mini-conferences are organized on a regular basis for PhD students to have the opportunity to present the results of their research for a critical audience of their peers and professors. The doctoral programme cooperates with other PhD programmes, especially within the Doctoral School of Philosophy, and with other schools as well, including the Doctoral Schools of German Studies, Art History, and others
