Course description

Aim of the course

The main purpose of the course is to provide the students with appropriate in depth knowledge in the below thematic areas:

  • conceptual background and framework of public health and health promotion related issues;
  • the different conceptual perspectives of health promotion and their evolution;
  • the relationship between drug prevention and health promotion;
  • trends and tendencies in health promotion – the Hungarian and the international situation;
  • actual and realistic opportunities of public education institutions related to health promotion
  • the main action fields and features of health promotion interventions;
  • intervention planning, monitoring and evaluation – main theoretical considerations and their practical implementation

Learning outcome, competences

knowledge:

  • has got a deeper understanding regarding the social determinants of health and illness;
  • properly understands the basic procedures relevant in modifying human behaviour with special respect to the organisational circumstances of a public education institutions
  • has an understanding regarding planning and developing health promoting interventions, as well as monitoring and evaluating. them

attitude:

  • is open towards the interdisciplinary handling/tackling of the emerging problems
  • is taking into consideration the culturally sensitive aspects of health related problems and is willing to apply this approach whilst dealing with them.

skills:

  • is able to develop complex health promotion related interventions whilst working in small groups
  • is able to take into consideration and exploit the special perspective of a psychologist whilst working on modifying the behaviour of the target group
  • is able to formulate critical and well substantiated comments on health promoting interventions and express sound recommendations in this regard.

Content of the course

Topics of the course

  • Development of theories and practices in the field of public health – health promotion.
  • Milestones of the development process from the bio-medical approach to the bio-psycho-social interpretation of health and the different anthropologies and theories underpinning health related behavioural changes.
  • Emerging categorisation of prevention interventions; problem centred and target group oriented approaches. The setting approach will be discussed in details.
  • The needs of the public education institutions and the existing prevention/health promotion programmes: demand and supply side. The criteria of choosing and developing appropriate prevention programmes, with special emphasis on the properties of the organisation and the target group (students and teachers).
  • Methodologies related to the practical implementation of health promoting programmes at school level.

Learning activities, learning methods

During the course a mixed approach will be applied: lectures combined with interactive discussions and with students’ presentations on relevant scientific articles and practical experiences. After and related to the presentations in-depth discussion of the topics will be ensured.

  • Written essay in group to check the theoretical knowledge of the participants.
  • Written assignment (in 5-7 pages) on a pre-agreed topic presented and discussed during the semester
