Short description

This program is recommended to applicants who wish to enter the motion picture industry, which is one of the most attractive fields of creative industry of our times and is in continuous transformation and expansion, inviting new talents and creative ideas. Students enrolling in the BA in Motion Pictures Studies at ELTE can gain knowledge in the making of motion pictures focusing on directorial skills with the help of well-prepared professors and small group education. Students will get acquainted with the creative, artistic approaches and the technological skills of the creation of motion pictures through practices of storytelling and direction of different forms of motion pictures and will gain basic knowledge in cinematography, editing and production.
This program enables students to gain experience in the field of the motion picture production including creative artistic, technical and financial decisions. During their studies they will also get acquainted with the history of motion pictures and the intermedial relations of film and other arts, like music, fine arts or literature. The BA in Motion Picture Studies will enable them to produce works in different fields of creative industry such as short or long feature films or documentaries, television or online media products, music videos, and other motion picture products.
Students, when finishing the program, must have:

  • extensive knowledge of all phases of the technological processes of film and television production from pre-production to post-production.
  • knowledge about the mechanism and operation of technical equipment necessary for film and television directing.
  • basic knowledge about the temporal, technical and professional requirements of the different phases of film and television directing.
  • sufficient knowledge in screenwriting, editing, cinematography and production to be able to cooperate with and guide the work of their colleagues operating in these fields.
  • comprehensive knowledge about acting, and directing actors, theoretical and practical principles, techniques and trends of theatre and cinema.

The program offers the track of Film and Television Directing in the framework of BA in Motion Picture Studies.

Strength of program

As the program is practice based, the core instructors and faculty members are professionals working in different fields of the cinema industry with long experience in realizing projects or working with university students. Most of them are award winning creators, film and television directors, cinematographers, editors, and scriptwriters. Some of them have international experience in filmmaking and teaching. Other courses are provided by faculty members specialized in film theory, film history, theatre, music or fine arts, all internationally acknowledged researchers and teachers with long experience.
Extensive practical courses and small group education enable students to develop their knowledge and skills in different fields of the creation of motion pictures, and to discover their strength which will help them to start and pursue a career in the creative industry.

Career opportunities

The program prepares students for jobs in various branches of the cultural/entertainment sector. Our graduates can continue their studies in MA level or can find different opportunities in the media and film industry.
Students graduating from the program have the skills to realize different products in the moving image industry, such as short and long feature and documentary films, TV shows, music videos, commercials, video blogs, etc. They can work for film production companies or create motion pictures used in other fields of the creative industry.

Entry requirements

The students who can apply for the Motion Picture Studies BA Program are expected to present the documentation of their certificate of matriculation from a secondary school and to submit their application with the necessary attachments.
The university accepts only certificates, which are equivalent to the Hungarian certificate of matriculation, thus appropriate for continuing one’s studies in university education. If the certificate is not in English, the university needs an official translation, which could be a translation by the secondary school as well.
If the applicant completes their secondary education during the current term and their certificate has not been issued before the application deadline, a proof of student status or a certification, which verifies that the applicant will receive matriculation is required instead. In case of acceptance as a student, however, the applicant must present their certificate of matriculation upon enrollment at the latest.

This program is not available for Hungarian citizens.

Documents to be submitted by applicants:
a) CV including the applicant’s previous achievements in the field of motion pictures (completed films or other motion picture products, festival invitations and awards, scholarships, workshops, other activities in the field, such as organization of a film festival, a film club etc.).
b) The link to a motion picture product of any type or genre of a length of max. 3 minutes created by the applicant earlier – the work should be shared via a video sharing service accessible from Hungary, in a publicly viewable form.
c) The synopsis of a future film project (not identical with the submitted motion picture product) of a length of max. one page, which includes the film’s theme, genre, length, and the planned form or platform of release.
d)  Statement of authorship declaring that the submitted work (motion picture product) and the synopsis are the works of the applicant, and stating in which creative field the applicant contributed to the realisation of the submitted motion picture product (e.g. directing, scriptwriting, cinematography, etc.)
e.) Motivation letter

The educational and outcome requirements are defined by the Ministry of Human Capacities, Regulation No. 18/2016. (VIII. 5.). Details of the application and admission process are defined by the Organisational and Operational Regulations of ELTE.

Language requirements

Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate a very good level of English-language skills.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam (the minimum recommended score is 550 on the paper-based exam (PBT) or 80 on the Internet-based exam (iBT) and the IELTS exams (with a recommended score of 6, and above) are preferred.

Application procedure

The application starts in the online application system. Students need to register in the system, fill in the online application form, upload the required documents and follow the instructions during the application process.
Applications will only be processed if the application fee (150 EUR; non-refundable) has been transferred to the Faculty’s bank account.

Entrance examination and selection process:

When the university receives the full application package and it has been checked by the Department of International Affairs an entrance exam date option will be sent no later than the application deadline for the relevant period. Please, check regularly your messages in the application system, and the e-mail address that is linked to the account. The applications are examined by the Admission Board no later than after application period and applicants are notified of the outcome of the selection in the online application system after the decision is official. Admission letters are sent out in the online application system after the admission procedure.

Procedure of the entrance examination:

The admission procedure takes place in three phases.

  • 1st phase: submission of documents
  • 2nd phase: written examination of 180 minutes including questions and creative tasks assessing the applicant’s general knowledge and skills in storytelling, visual expression and film analysis.
  • 3rd phase: creative examination and personal interview via skype: applicants are required to realize on their own a creative task communicated on the 1st day of the 3rd phase that they have to submit 5 days later. Following this they will discuss their submitted documents, the written exam and the creative tasks with faculty members in a personal interview.

Only those applicants are admitted to the 2nd and 3rd phase of the application process who have acquired half of the maximum points at the previous phase.
Successful applicants must have a good command of English to pass the entrance exam. Ranking is based on the results of the three phases of the entrance exam.
