Hi! I’m Devara (re: Dévárá), an international student from Indonesia. I love exploring Budapest - the city’s rich cultural history always inspires me. I enjoy understanding stories and culture through long walks, and I’m currently developing my Hungarian. I also love cooking, journaling, and creating memories with friends. I’m passionate about mental health advocacy, cross‑cultural experiences, and anything that allows me to connect with people from different backgrounds. I’m always happy to meet new people and learn about their journeys.
"Don’t hesitate; just do it, and you’ll be surprised by what life has in store for you. Your time at ELTE will be full of opportunities, and the more you engage, the more unforgettable your experience will be."
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT ELTE?
What stood out to me most about ELTE is how welcoming and diverse the community is. As if ELTE is a melting pot of the world, with students from different countries, cultures, and academic backgrounds coming together in one place. Through my programme, I met seven incredible women who became my closest friends - something I’m truly grateful for. ELTE creates an atmosphere where you feel comfortable being yourself and curious about others. As an international student, that openness made my transition much easier and made me excited to begin my studies here.
WHAT MAKES STUDYING AT ELTE SO GREAT?
Studying at ELTE is great because the university combines strong academic foundations with a genuine intention to support integration, not just traditional lectures. The campus is in the heart of Budapest, surrounded by history, culture, and vibrant student life. I appreciate how ELTE encourages critical thinking, exploring new perspectives, and joining activities outside your programme - it makes learning feel dynamic and meaningful.
WHAT ARE / WERE YOUR CHALLENGES IN YOUR STUDY PROGRAM?
One of my challenges was adjusting my academic expectations and making sure I stayed aligned with my interest in mental health advocacy. It took time to find the right balance across my courses, but so far, I’ve really enjoyed the journey.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?
I overcame these challenges by asking questions, talking to classmates, and giving myself time to adapt. I explored the campus, built small routines, and slowly everything became familiar. Connecting with my girls and other international students helped me broaden my perspectives while staying true to my goals - we figured things out together and supported one another.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ELTE IN THREE WORDS?
Inclusive, Witty, Flexible.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR DEGREE WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?
My degree will help me shape the field I’ve always been passionate about - bridging mental health and the humanitarian world. It deepens my understanding of people, cultures, and social systems. It strengthens my communication skills, empathy, and ability to work with diverse communities - all essential in both my personal life and future career. It also gives me confidence to navigate international environments and contribute meaningfully wherever I go.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS AT ELTE?
I recommend future students to explore during their time here. Try everything! Explore the campus and the city, and connect with others as much as possible. Don’t hesitate; just do it, and you’ll be surprised by what life has in store for you. Your time at ELTE will be full of opportunities, and the more you engage, the more unforgettable your experience will be.
