Heidelberg University - ELTE Joint Summer University (2010-2015)

Multidisciplinary Joint Summer University (2010-2015)

The institutional cooperation between the two universities

The cooperation of Heidelberg University and Eötvös Loránd University dates back to 1982. The two universities were always deeply involved in faculty and student exchange. The exchange of students for summer university programs was one of the points of the first Agreement of Cooperation already, which was a very modern way of cooperation in those times.

The idea of a joint summer university was born in July 2009 when ten students from Heidelberg participated in a one-week summer school in Budapest which focused on applied geographical topics in Politics, Economy, and History. The partner universities agreed on establishing a joint summer university program in order to develop a German-Hungarian network, to extend the courses offered to participants and to establish a platform for joint research projects for students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and professors. The agreement was signed in Heidelberg on 24 November 2009 between the two universities.

The main aims of the summer university cooperation

  • Curriculum development for the summer universities
  • Developing a network of German and Hungarian students and faculty members
  • Facilitating joint research and cooperation mostly between students
