On May 8, the Senate of ELTE will award the title "doctor et professor honoris causa" to Jürgen Paul Schwindt, Professor of Heidelberg University, who on this occasion will give a lecture in English entitled Philologia forensis. On the genealogy of the human question.
Jürgen Paul Schwindt is an internationally renowned, pioneering figure of classical philology and a leading researcher of Roman literature and philological theory. As a professor at Heidelberg University, he has maintained a close relationship with ELTE for nearly two decades, actively supporting Hungarian researchers. Building on the traditions of the Bonn school, he has become one of the most innovative representatives of Latin studies, opening classical philology towards literary and cultural studies. He played a key role in introducing a comparative approach. With the “Theorie der Philologie” initiative, he contributed to strengthening the dialogue between ancient studies and literary theory. His scholarly work is outstanding: he is the author of several books and over a hundred articles. His research focuses on classical literature, its modern influences, and the history and theory of philology. As an educator and organizer, he has had a significant impact, shaping international communities. Through his collaborations with ELTE, he has played an important role in the internationalization of Hungarian philological research.
In his honorary doctorate lecture, the Professor of Heidelberg University will discuss how we interpret the “human question” in texts and how our own reading shapes this process.
