Hello!, ¡hola!, hallo!, szia! My name is Laura Gabriela, straight from the vibrant city of Bogotá, Colombia, and I’m so thrilled to currently call Budapest my home! It is a true pleasure to meet you all!
I greeted you in four languages because each represents a piece of my story: English as my daily bridge to connect with the world; Spanish as my beloved mother tongue, which shaped my journey as a former literacy and language professor back home; German for my deep fascination with its culture, literature, and music; and Hungarian, the language of my new home, which constantly challenges me to learn how to answer back to life in new ways.
If I had to describe myself, I’d say I’m an endlessly curious soul with a deep passion for learning and human expression. I love languages, literature, philosophy, and unravelling the symbols all around us. Whether I’m diving into a great book, writing, watching cinema, sketching, designing creative presentations, or letting the energy of rock and metal fuel my days, I’m always engaging with ideas. I’m an explorer at heart, delighted by long city walks, discovering new cultures, and stepping into fresh adventures with genuine enthusiasm.
Above all, my ground is my family. We speak every single day; they are my emotional anchor, my core support system, and the ones who shaped who I am today. I am profoundly grateful for this whole journey, knowing I explore the world with their love holding me steady. After all, life to me is about building bridges —between languages, cultures, and people— and I couldn't be happier to build them from here, ready to learn, create, and share meaningful stories with our diverse academic community!

WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT ELTE?
What stood out to me about ELTE was its deeply multicultural environment: the chance to meet, learn from, and collaborate with people from many different nationalities, each bringing their own cultural framework and something meaningful to contribute. I was also struck by the balance between the classical and the contemporary; walking through its buildings feels like witnessing a dialogue between history and modernity.
ELTE’s long tradition adds a special dimension. Knowing that the university has been functioning since 1635 makes its architecture feel alive with time. There is a quiet magic in its corridors, a sense of continuity that reminds you that you are part of something larger.
WHAT MAKES STUDYING AT ELTE SO GREAT?
Studying at ELTE is truly special because it offers one of the few Semiotics programs in the world. Being part of a field that explores meaning, symbols, and cultural narratives in such depth is both rare and inspiring. The academic environment encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
What makes the experience even greater is the international community: learning alongside students and professors from diverse backgrounds enriches every discussion and expands your perspective. ELTE combines intellectual rigour with a global atmosphere, creating a space where ideas can grow freely.
WHAT ARE / WERE YOUR CHALLENGES IN YOUR STUDY PROGRAM?
One of the unexpected challenges in my program has actually happened outside the classroom: explaining what Semiotics is. Every time I mention my field of study, I find myself clarifying the term, because it is still relatively unknown or often confused with something else. In a way, this has become part of my mission: helping others understand the value and scope of this fascinating discipline.
Within the program itself, my main challenge has been organising my time effectively: balancing readings, academic commitments, personal responsibilities, and the everyday routines that sustain life. Semiotics is intellectually demanding, and creating a rhythm that allows me to study deeply while maintaining balance has required intention and discipline.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?
I overcame these challenges by reconnecting with the fact that I genuinely love what I study. Every presentation, assignment, and reading becomes meaningful when I align it with my interests and with my long‑term project. That sense of purpose gives me energy and keeps me motivated.
Balancing academic life with real life has also been essential. I learned to create routines that support both: setting aside time for deep study, but also for rest, personal responsibilities, and the everyday rituals that keep me grounded. Finding this rhythm, where academic work and real life coexist rather than compete, has helped me stay focused and organised.
And when people ask what Semiotics is, I learned to explain it clearly and enthusiastically. Instead of seeing it as a difficulty, I treat it as an opportunity to make the field more visible. Those conversations remind me why I chose this discipline in the first place.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ELTE IN THREE WORDS?
Multicultural, Interdisciplinary, Transformative.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR DEGREE WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?
My degree will help me by giving me a deeper understanding of how meaning is created, interpreted, and transformed across cultures. Semiotics teaches you to read the world, not only texts, but behaviours, symbols, narratives, and social dynamics. This perspective is valuable in any field that requires critical thinking, cultural awareness, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
It also supports my personal growth: studying Semiotics sharpens my sensitivity to nuance, helps me navigate multicultural environments, and strengthens my ability to connect ideas across disciplines. Whether I pursue research, teaching, cultural analysis, or creative projects, this degree gives me a framework to understand the world with sense and intention.
I also see Semiotics as a powerful complement to my background in Philosophy, Humanities, and Multimedia Communication. I have always been drawn to programs that expand and enrich my formation in the Humanities, my true passion, and Semiotics feels like a natural continuation of that path. It brings together the analytical, the cultural, and the creative dimensions of my academic journey, allowing me to integrate everything I’ve learned into a coherent and meaningful whole.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS AT ELTE?
My main recommendation for future students at ELTE is to choose a program they truly love. When you study something that genuinely inspires you, every challenge becomes manageable because motivation gives meaning to the effort. Passion creates direction, and direction creates resilience.
I also encourage students to fully embrace the opportunities that ELTE offers. This experience is not only academic; it is profoundly life‑changing. Take advantage of the multicultural environment to build connections, engage in networking, and make friends. ELTE is an extraordinary place to meet people, enjoy university activities, and explore Budapest and Hungary through the lens of an international community.
And above all, don’t be afraid of the challenges that may appear along the way. ELTE is a supportive environment, and within this community you will find people who accompany you, guide you, and help you grow. You are never alone in the process.
Staying organised is also essential. Balancing academic responsibilities with personal life and giving yourself time to rest is key to thriving. Creating a rhythm that allows space for study, friendships, self‑care, and everyday routines will make the experience richer and more sustainable.
