Summer Life at Lake Balaton: My Favourite Active Adventures

I’m Zhisan from China, currently studying Early Childhood Education at ELTE. Every summer, even if they're physically in Budapest, most Hungarians are already at Lake Balaton in their minds. And honestly, I get it.

When the weather gets hot, there's no better place to be. As someone who loves sports and outdoor activities, I've found that Balaton is much more than a sightseeing destination. Whether it's cycling, swimming, sailing, paddleboarding, or camping by the lake, there's always something fun to do.

Here are a few of my favourite Balaton experiences.

Cycle Around the Lake

One of the best ways to explore Lake Balaton is by bike. There are cycling routes that run along the shoreline, making it easy to enjoy the scenery while staying active.

What I love most is that you can turn the ride into a full-day adventure. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and you'll even find bike repair stations on the route, which is reassuring if you're planning a longer ride.

One of my favourite stops was a zoo near Siófok. If you're planning to visit, go early. We arrived in the morning and walked straight in, but by noon the queue had become surprisingly long.

The biggest amazement was the alpacas. Unlike many zoos where animals stay at a distance, here you can get surprisingly close to them and even pet them. Needless to say, they quickly became the stars of our visit.

Take a Swim in Hungary's "Sea"

Locals often call Lake Balaton the Hungarian Sea, and once summer arrives, it's easy to understand why.

Swimming is probably the most classic Balaton activity. After cycling under the summer sun, jumping into the lake feels like the perfect reward. The water is usually calm, shallow near the shore, and great for a refreshing swim. Sometimes the simplest activities end up being the most enjoyable.

Try Paddleboarding

If you want to spend time on the water but prefer something a little more active, paddleboarding is a great option. It's beginner-friendly, surprisingly relaxing, and gives you a completely different perspective of the lake. Standing on the board surrounded by open water feels peaceful, even during the busy summer season.

It's also a surprisingly good workout, especially if you're trying to stay balanced while pretending you know exactly what you're doing.

Go Sailing

Sailing was something completely new for me. I went with a friend who has a sailing license and knew exactly what she was doing, which was reassuring because I definitely didn't.

What surprised me was how active sailing actually is. Whenever the wind changed direction, adjustments had to be made quickly. The sails needed to be repositioned, ropes adjusted, and everyone had to react fast to keep the boat moving efficiently.

As for me, I mostly sat there enjoying the view and trying to look like I understood what was happening. Unfortunately, it didn't take long before I got seasick.

What should have been a cool sailing experience ended with me spending most of the trip lying down and trying to sleep through it. At least I got to enjoy the scenery for a little while before my stomach gave up.

Camp by the Shore

Camping by the lake is another experience I'd recommend. There are dedicated camping grounds around Balaton where you can pitch a tent and spend a few days close to the water. Waking up near the lake and spending the entire day outdoors feels very different from staying in a hotel. One lesson I learned the hard way: don't leave food unattended outside your tent. The lakeside pigeons are always watching. The moment you take your eyes off a piece of bread, they'll appear out of nowhere and start making plans for it. Let's just say the pigeons at Lake Balaton are very experienced campers.

Don't Leave Without Trying the Corn

No Lake Balaton summer feels complete without corn. Sooner or later, you'll hear someone walking along the shore carrying a basket or pushing a cart, calling out: "Kukorica! Kukorica!"

That's the Hungarian word for corn, and it's a word worth learning. When you hear it, don't hesitate—go buy one.

On a hot summer day, you might not feel like eating a heavy meal, but a warm, sweet ear of corn somehow always sounds like a good idea. Simple, fresh, and surprisingly satisfying.

To me, hearing "Kukorica!" in the distance is just as much a part of Lake Balaton as the lake itself.

When I think about Lake Balaton now, I don't immediately think about famous landmarks.

I think about cycling along the shore, stopping to pet alpacas, cooling off with a swim, accidentally sleeping through a sailing trip because of seasickness, protecting my bread from ambitious pigeons, and hearing someone shout "Kukorica!" somewhere in the distance.

That's what summer at Balaton feels like to me.
