Study program: Finance and Accounting BA

Country: Maldives

Hi! My name is Izhaam. I study Finance and Accounting at ELTE. l am also a researcher in accounting. I came to Budapest from the Maldives. I pursue a variety of hobbies, from swimming once a week to Argentine tango. I am quite talented at running. I am 21 years old.

WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT ELTE?

I desired to pursue Accountancy, and this was offered by the recently established GTK faculty of ELTE. What led to the ultimate choice was the reputation of ELTE as the best in Hungary and the notable alumni. I also liked that ELTE was in Budapest, the heart of Hungary! I loved the beautiful pictures of the campus architecture, like the library, and my faculty as well.

WHAT MAKES STUDYING AT ELTE SO GREAT?

In my faculty attendance is not mandatory which is an aspect I love so much. It gives students so much flexibility with their schedule, particularly for someone like me who has a lot to handle. The university also offers countless opportunities for things to do in your spare time. BEAC offers countless sports options, and the faculties offer opportunities such as being a tuition teacher for a subject for pay or even becoming a research assistant for a professor. If you feel like learning Hungarian like me that is also offered! The faculties of the university are also located in nice parts of the city which brings a good feeling when going to the university.

WHAT ARE / WERE YOUR CHALLENGES IN YOUR STUDY PROGRAM?

Getting used to computer-based exams at the GTK faculty was a challenge for someone who has been used to paper based exams. I remember there was an initial testing of the GTK exam center for new students. The international coordinator remarked that you would get used to it eventually, and so now paper-based exams are kind of foreign to me. It was also a challenge for me to learn subjects like law or psychology, which I had not learnt before. Getting adapted to the culture of ELTE and the university system like Neptun for example was also a bit difficult at the beginning.

HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?

Keeping the mindset that I needed to adapt to the new environment. A trick I believe in is to keep doing it and you will eventually become accustomed to new surroundings!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ELTE IN THREE WORDS?

Student oriented - Flexible - Bright

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR DEGREE WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?

The degree has led to my current job which I love - a researcher in accounting. Any degree would of course make you more vibrant in the job market and help you with further studies. Ultimately, this degree will enhance my knowledge in accounting and finance which was my purpose for applying for the degree.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS AT ELTE?

Yes, that recommendation is to dream big. You are in control of your life. ELTE and Hungary, in a broader context, provide ample opportunities for progression in life, from student-run clubs to workshops and the like. Be hungry to grab them as they come along the way!
